Overview
Cascade
is a scattering matrix program for the design of microwave and millimeter wave
circuits and components. Scattering matrix analysis revolutionized the design
of overmoded gyrotron circuits and is now used for designing waveguide components,
including pillbox and coaxial windows, mode converters, tapers, and transitions.
Scattering matrix codes generate the scattering matrix by calculating the
coupling coefficients between transitions, including the effects of dielectrics.
The input is simple, and the analysis typically takes only a few minutes. The
accuracy typically exceeds that obtained with mesh type codes, such as HFSS and
Eminence, and requires a fraction of the time to obtain a solution. The analysis
can also find and identify trapped resonances generated by ghost or trapped modes.
The
code will facilitate development of waveguide and circuit components consisting
of circular, coaxial, or rectangular waveguide sections. A user-friendly, intuitive,
graphical user interface facilitates user input and post processing with material
properties for several standard ceramics built into the user interface. Output
includes the complete mode composition throughout the problem domain. This allows
the determination of the scattering matrix parameters, electric field profiles,
resonant frequencies and Qs, VSWRs, electric field gradients, mode content, and
ohmic loss. Other features were recently incorporated. The code can be
used to design smooth wall mode converters and tapers. Scattering parameters can
be entered from other programs, such as Ansoft Corporation's High Frequency Structure
Simulator, to allow waveguide system design incorporating components requiring
3D finite element analysis. In addition, scattering parameters can be entered
from experimental measurements and the waveguide components optimized for specific
types of performance. Several optimization routines are built into the program,
and others can be easily linked in by users. The basic engine for Cascade
was funded by the Vacuum Electronics Division of the Naval Research Laboratory
and is available to the microwave tube community. Some of the current development
is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy through SBIR Grant number DE-FG03-97ER82343.
